COVINGTON TWP, Pa., October 18, 2024- The bright lights shining in the field, the smell of
popcorn, hearing the band play “Seven Nation army…” arguably one of the best times of the year some might believe. Some of the many senior participants in that variety of different factors that go into a football game, have to come to an end sooner than later. Whether it is playing an instrument in the band, spinning flags during Halftime, cheering your heart out on the sidelines, or putting your blood, sweat, and tears into the game itself, it has a strong impact on many students.
Senior Varsity football cheerleader, Ella Olenchak, feels emotional on the subject of matter. “As a senior, it is very sad to think that this is my last year on the team. Cheer has been such a big part of my life for the past 11 years, so to see it come to an end is very bittersweet for me.” She is a team advocate, and an important factor of the squad. Not only is Ella dedicated and hardworking, she also brings a warm and welcoming environment to the girls. “I feel as though I tried my best to make all the girls comfortable on the team. Especially as a freshman, coming on to a Varsity squad not knowing anyone is super scary. So, I always tried my best to keep their spirits up at practice and make sure that they knew I was there for them.” She has also been known for being the squad’s “Team Hype Girl,” which means her title must be filled by a newcomer next season.
Senior Varsity football player, Karson Gibson, also has a few things to add to this topic. “I am very upset that this is the last year I will be on the field with my brother and coaches.” Not only is tough love and acting strong in front of teammates crucial for football, but also showing leadership and setting good examples for the players is as well. When asked if Karson has made an impact on some of the underclassmen, he responded with, “Yes I do, some of the underclassmen are some of my closest friends, and being a captain, I think I have set a good example.” Although the boys have not had the most successful season, it does not make the team’s motivation any weaker. Karson was also asked if he felt a sense of accomplishment throughout the season, or in high school in general. He stated, “No, my goal is to help lead our team to a district championship.” Karson may have not met his all-time goal, but he has still had great victories throughout the years.
As Ella and Karson get closer to their final games, along with many other seniors approaching the same realization, they have made their seasons special. These two seniors have made some great memories they will never forget, as well as make this time of their lives a time that will always be near and dear to their hearts. When both teams have their final huddle after a game, the feeling will be an uncontrollable emotional site.
