COVINGTON TWP. Pa., Nov. 1, 2024 – North Pocono is officially ending the first three months of the school year. First quarter for all the students was fairly easy, the grades were good, attendance was sharp, and spirits were high. Sadly, all good things must come to an end. The next few months will not feel real and won’t be as easy as kids would hope.
It is about to be November and that means final grades are due and reports will be out. The beginning of the year always seems easy. Students and staff are getting used to who is around them, and how to work in the classroom. Assignments are easier since it is just the start of the class students are in. “I think it, for some people, would be easier in the beginning of the year. I think that is independent on the student,” guidance counselor Mr. West shared. He felt there were other aspects that will affect students and their grades considering summer reading. Senior Madison Hedrick expressed, “No, the beginning of the year is not easier than others because I feel like people are still adjusting to coming back from summer break.” Both Mr. West and Madison expressed that depending on the student it will decide whether or not the start of the year was or wasn’t easy.
Along with good grades, attendance was great. It is the beginning of the year, so there is no reason for students to not show up to school. Yes, waking up early in the morning isn’t always easy, but students had to get back in the flow of everything. As the year goes on, the attendance will drop because students will start to feel that coming to school is too stressful, or they just don’t want to come at all. Mr. West put it out there, “I think attendance plays a big part with grades.” As the year goes on it is normal for students to not want to show up, but when grades drop, attendance has the chance of increasing. Madison stated, “once the beginning of the year hits I think students just don’t want to come into school.” She feels that the more a person is willing to try, the more of a positive attitude they will have.
It gets hard to apply oneself for so long, but there is always something to look forward to. Bringing up again that it is November, means Thanksgiving and Christmas break are just around the corner. After a long first quarter, second quarter is coming. Students will finally be able to have time to themselves without having to worry about school, even if that is only for a week or two. Mr. West shared advice for students by saying, “Having a routine, having good time management skills, and then staying the course through the winter will help.” Students need to be willing to try in order to keep spirits and everything that comes along with school high.
School isn’t always easy for everyone, but North Pocono will try their best to make it. Throughout the next few months, if a student is willing to try their hardest, it will reflect on more to come in the future.
