COVINGTON TWP, Pa., November 1st, 2024 – This year, Halloween lands on a Thursday. Students dread waking up for school, especially with a full day ahead of them. Students also tend to stay out late doing everything from trick- or- treating to partying. Waking up the next day for school is a horrific thought, but the excitement of Halloween keeps students going!
When the term “trick-or-treating” is brought up, most adults would assume this is a kid’s activity. Senior Ella Olenchek tends to disagree. Ella has gone trick or treating every year of high school. She believes that since Halloween is on a Thursday, that leaves not much else to do other than trick-or-treat. Ella says, “I have to get up the next morning for school anyway, so we choose to leave any other Halloween activities till the upcoming weekend.” Ella refers to the weekend following Halloween as “Halloweekend.” She also believes there should not be school the following day after Halloween saying, “If Halloween was on a Friday, people could stay out as late as they want because there is no stress of waking up for school the next morning.” Halloween is not considered a national holiday; therefore, schools tend to not take off for Halloween.
Over in the front office, Mrs. McHale has been dealing with students being late to school for about two months now. She has previously not worked any Halloweens. She says, “from watching past years, students tend to skip the day after Halloween and not many students come in late the day of Halloween. They like to come to school in hopes of fun activities.” Mrs. McHale is constantly checking in late students and students who leave early. She says, “This year, I believe a lot of students will end up coming in late on Friday because school is on a Thursday.”
Though Halloween is on a Thursday, students should have the freedom to celebrate this holiday without the stress of school the next day. Not only should they be able to celebrate the 31st, but the upcoming weekend as well. Halloween is like a countdown till the actual fun begins during Halloweekend. Saving all the fun for the coming weekend saves all the absences that may result from Halloween.
