COVINGTON TWP, Pa., Nov. 8, 2024- Halloween was just last week, right? Retailers and brands are already changing pace and switching gears to a new highly anticipated holiday. Christmas has grown into much more than a holiday; it’s more of a season, one that is awaited and anticipated by many.
Wyatt Wellman, senior at North Pocono, has worked at Bill’s ShopRite in Daleville for 4 months. Wellman claims that the store started getting Christmas products around the sixteenth of October and by the week before Halloween, the seasonal aisle was flooded with Christmas decor. “I’m no hater of Christmas but I feel like Thanksgiving is completely blown over” stated Wyatt. “I think we need to decorate for Thanksgiving then Christmas, I don’t think Christmas is over-hyped but I think we need to pump the brakes on it a little bit.” Not only does decor’s early arrival place stress on the workers, it also adds a new level of stress to the minds of loved ones. They can’t even get through one holiday without having to plan and map out what the next ones are going to look like. This can be especially hard for those who are in a tough spot financially.
Sophomore Lucilla Bolsar is a Christmas fanatic, claiming that it’s her favorite holiday of the year. Even with her overwhelming enthusiasm for the celebration, she offers some mixed reviews about the decorating and eagerness of retailers. “I feel like they look for money anywhere they can. Don’t get me wrong I love Christmas, but I feel like decorating the first week of November is just another way for them to get people to buy stupid little knick knacks for a longer period of time.” It starts out with candy and plates or napkins and quickly escalates to full decor and an overwhelming stock of toys and cards. Stores quickly take advantage of the anticipation. Cilla claims, ”people really started to lose the true meaning of Christmas because stores are all in it for the money and keeping up with the gift giving narrative of the holiday.”
Holly Jolly, Ho Ho Ho, Christmas lights, and hot cocoa all sound delightful, don’t they? But should the things that were accessories for so long overtake the holiday itself? Only that can be decided by the consumers and how much they give into the tactics of the money magnets.
