COVINGTON TWP, Pa., Nov. 15, 2024- It is that time again, it’s the month of November where North Pocono does their annual Turkey Bowl. The Mini-Thon club runs this to raise money for the end of the year to donate to For The Kids. This is a flag football event where girls and boys are on a team together and try to win the whole bowl.
Executive Director of Mini-Thon, Abby Wiggins, talks about the ups and downs of the event. “The turkey bowl used to be an annual tradition dating back to the late 2010s. Once COVID hit, the fundraiser stopped until the 2022-2023 officers brought it back. Now we continue it as a beloved student body Thanksgiving tradition. The club now makes this a yearly tradition and the community loves it. “We see so many more teams get added each year and you can just tell that it gets more popular each year.” Seeing people come out and support for the cause shows the club to keep this tradition going.
Secretary of Mini-Thon Mariah Wolff speaks about the turkey bowl background. “The turkey bowl is an opportunity for students to come together and play a sport that is extremely popular during the holiday season, football. It is an alternative to the known “Powder Puff” except everyone can participate and not just females.” At the end of this the money goes to the cause of Mini-Thon. “We get lots of excitement every year and judging by its popularity, we assume we should continue it. All of our money goes towards our end of the year total that is donated to Four Diamonds for research and patient care.” As Wolff has only been a part of Mini-Thon for three years she’s seen so much improvement with the turkey bowl. “In the years I have been here, the participation continues to grow. This year we have a total of 14 teams, which is the most participation we have seen in the last 3 years.”
November 22 will be under the lights at Trojan stadium where all 14 teams will compete to win the tournament of the turkey bowl. This is mainly for fun but most of it is to raise money for the Four Diamonds project For The Kids. The Mini-Thon club is so excited to host yet another successful event.
