COVINGTON TWP, PA., November 15, 2024 – Politics is a topic known to make some people quick to judge and argue or sigh and roll their eyes. Can it even be discussed with anyone besides oneself? Politics is a personal opinion that in reality, nobody needs to know who you vote for but you. How do other people view political discussions among friends, family, or loved ones?
Senior, Aidan Bassi feels politics are very important and should be discussed among peers. However, he feels sometimes politics can ruin the mood of a good time. He is grateful that his family and friends tend to keep to themselves when politics are brought up. “My family all has the same political view, so arguments are pretty rare in the house with politics.” Although he is now 18, meaning he could vote and discuss if he feels, he chooses to keep his opinion to himself to avoid confrontation with peers.
Second Senior, Mariah Wolf, also agrees with Bassi that politics are important and crucial for our world today. Nonetheless, her family has brought up politics in the house before, not necessarily agreeing with one another. “With two parents who have the exact opposite belief system, the dinner table is not usually the best place to bring up current events. There never seems to be a correct answer or a correct way to think.” Wolff also feels as if she is unsure of which side she believes in. “Because of their disagreements, it has caused me to have a very split belief system. Although it is difficult, I think this provides me with a sense of perspective for both sides, and I have an easier time understanding the stances of the political parties whether I agree or not.” So yes, at times Mariah feels overstimulated and can get frustrated hearing her two parents with different opinions get frustrated with one another. However, here is a positive perspective of being knowledgeable with both political stand points.
Every four years when November rolls around, people are quick to persuade, argue, and judge people on their political opinions. Some folks believe that politics should be discussed among others, hearing and listening to other people’s point of view on certain issues. While others believe it should be completely kept quiet and only the individual knows their opinion. At the end of the day, it comes down to a personal opinion on how someone wants to discuss or argue their stand point on a certain topic. What people can be more cautious about is observing the individuals they are conversing with, or the people around them.
