COVINGTON TWP, Pa., November 15, 2024 – This season the swim team consists of only five members. Since the swim team is so small, it is hard for students to even recognize that the team exists. Being able to promote the team to see if students are willing to join it can make the team increasingly grow. If the opportunity were to present itself, most students would be willing to try a new sport.
Students are also unaware of the fact that swimming is a winter sport. There is no promotion around the school of this information. As well as nothing said about the sport in general for students to go off of. Sophomore, Zane Cruz, was unaware of the swim team’s existence. Zane shared, “I had no idea there was a swim team because nobody has ever said anything about the team to me.” Zane plays hockey year round, and does not currently have the time to try out the swim team. “If I ever had the time it does seem like something new that could be fun to participate in.” If students were more aware that the option of swimming was there, they may be more willing to try it.
Practices are right after school from only 3-4:30. This sport is an amazing new sport to try if students have never done it. The coaches tend to break it down and teach swimmers how to become better. Practices are required, but only about two days a week. It tends to be a flexible sport.
Though the swim team exists, North Pocono does not have their own pool, also making students question how they may swim if there is no pool to swim in. Dunmore’s team is combined with North Pocono and together they make up one big team. Junior Addison Szakmary knew about the swim team. Though she had an idea of its existence, she knew no details about this sport. Addison said, “usually on the morning announcements they say all the wins from the sports but I have never heard anything about swimming.” Addison had heard about the team through friends she has at Dunmore High School. But she has heard no mention of the team at school. “I have always been fascinated about swimming but I never really thought about actually trying it. None of my friends from school swim and I feel like if I were to do it for fun since I only have two years left of high school, I would want to do it with my friends.”
Promoting swimming can be the make or break for the team. The word would need to get out for students to gain interest. Just like clubs, there are signs up where people promote them. They explain to students how the club works so they may find interest in joining. When students heard about the team for the first time there was a spark of curiosity.
