COVINGTON TWP, Pa., September 23, 2024 – During the rise of new technology in 2019, AirPods started to become popular, after teens discovered their efficient and sleek look. After being used to wired headphones, and bulky headphones, AirPods offered a new sense of comfortability. As the years progressed, students started to abuse their privilege in classes.
Throughout classes, students tend to get bored easily. After discovering AirPods, some students believe they found a solution. Studies show that music actually improves and helps maintain focus. Sadly, students can’t be trusted with the permission of teachers to use their AirPods in class. Using AirPods during class can stray students away from the main focus of work. Though it’s not the music in itself, it’s the students’ intentions behind it. They use the excuse to be on their phones. They say that they are just “changing the song” when they are actually using their phone for something else.
With technology becoming something new, it has room for improvement, and it comes with new discoveries. AirPods can make phone calls, listen to pre-recordings, and overall find a way to cheat. This can lead to new problems in the classroom. After asking multiple teachers around the building, four out of five of them stated that they have caught at least one student cheating with AirPods. Also after asking junior student Addison Szakmary about her opinion on AirPods in class, she stated “I think they are enjoyable, but when students use them in class they get distracting.” This use of AirPods can lead to kids not working as hard as they should for their work and tests. Nowadays students need to go back to the books with non additional technology involved. Especially since they do use their Chromebooks daily, another thing they dont need is their AirPods to distract them.
AirPods can get to extremely loud levels when in use. The max decibel on AirPods is 105 decibels. If someone were to have both AirPods in, they wouldn’t be able to hear anything around them. In case of an emergency this could be extremely dangerous. Even though most teachers have a rule in the classroom that states “No AirPods allowed”, students still find a way to use them. If there was an emergency in the classroom, a student should be able to hear what’s going on so they know what to do. Instead they won’t know the directions because of the AirPods. Roaming the hallways with AirPods in their ears isn’t any better. If they had their AirPods in and there were signals of danger around them, they wouldn’t be able to hear it. Which could lead to dangerous events.
Even though AirPods are small, compact, and enjoyable, they should be kept at home. Students need to be able to learn without a stray focus. Having AirPods during school time is extremely dangerous and could be life-threatening. All schools should consider making it a rule for their students.
