COVINGTON TWP, Pa., Sept. 27, 2024 – Twin sisters, freshman Isabella and Abigail Walsh are taking the BMX world by storm.
Last year, after attending a BMX race with their step-brothers, they both found an interest in the sport. Their step-brothers Aidan age fifteen, Ian age ten, and Alex age nine also participate in racing within their age groups. When Isabella and Abigail joined their step-brothers at the track and tried racing for the first time, the twins immediately loved it.
Since they are sisters, racing in the same age group has brought friendly competition to the table. Isabella and Abigail said they both do try to do better than each other. This doesn’t mean they aren’t supportive of each other though. Abigail explained how she feels by saying, “No matter what at the end of the day I’m still proud of her.” Racing has made the two girls a lot closer than they had been before. Isabella expanded on that thought when she said, “I feel like it has brought us closer together because we can both relate to the experience.”
Skipping the first day of school to travel to a track just outside of Pittsburgh, Isabella and Abigail participated in the state finals. To prepare herself mentally for the race, Abigail said to get rid of nerves she just “yapped” a lot. On the other hand, Isabella shook away her nerves by staying quiet and blasting The Weeknd in her ears. Abigail placed 3rd in the state, and Isabella placed 5th. During this race Isabella got in a crash where she had a concussion. Since then, she has been trying to get back into racing after being cleared to participate again.
The last thing that both Isabella and Abigail brought up was how welcoming the racing community was to them. Abigail said, “You basically become part of another family” this comes from all of the people involved in her team. She said so many of her closest friends have come from racing. Isabella being slightly less outspoken stuck with a simple, “There is a really great community.” The difference between the twins is very noticeable, but their shared love for racing is stronger.
