COVINGTON TWP, Pa., Oct. 18, 2024- High School is a time period full of new experiences and opportunities; however, this profound excitement also comes with great responsibility. The new and challenging classes offered to high schoolers can be overwhelming, but the electives presented to students help personalize their high school experience to specifically fit their wants and needs. Although the required core classes are extremely important and beneficial to North Pocono students, the high school has so much more to offer, which allows these individuals to showcase much more talent rather than solely traditional academics.
Melaina Evans is a current junior enrolled in Mrs. Wall’s second period Foods and Nutritions class. Along with being a dedicated student, Melaina is a two-sport varsity athlete that must stay energized throughout the school day along with afternoon practices. “I have learned so much in food’s class and it’s only the first quarter. I thought we would just be cooking, but we have also learned a lot about making healthy choices.” Although this class is not a required course at North Pocono, athletes like Melaina will learn to understand the importance of making nutritious choices to power their bodies for school along with afternoon practices.
Senior Sophia Derenick plans to attend college and study to become a registered dietitian. The foods and nutrition class has, “taught me (Sophia) so many important things that I will eventually need to learn in college.” The importance of learning about proper nutrition and health translates into real life scenarios, such as career choices. This class not only enables students to have fun and learn hands-on skills in the kitchen, but also learn important life advice that will be useful down the road.
Mrs. Wall, the beloved foods and nutrition teacher, is very passionate about educating her students- “I believe the benefits of food and nutrition class in high school provides students with the necessary skills and knowledge on how to make educated decisions on living a healthy life.” As she has taught many different students throughout her teaching career, Mrs. Wall hopes that her students, “have fun, enjoy the class, learn about how foods affect our health, how to cook different meals, and eat healthy.”
As education advances and high schools become more aware of the benefits of these types of classes, it would not be a surprise if nutrition education is implemented into the core curriculum.
