COVINGTON TWP, Pa., Nov 1, 2024 – Like every other holiday, Halloween comes hand in hand with traditions and customs that vary according to age, culture, and family history. North Pocono offers many traditions and activities that coincide with Halloween and its arrival.
Trick or treating, dressing up, flannels, and so much more come together to form the spooky season! Seniors at North Pocono are given the opportunity to formulate their wildest costumes to compete for categories such as scariest, funniest, most original, and best duo/group. Shayla Doyle, a recent graduate of North Pocono, did not participate in the dressing up but offers an insight on the atmosphere it creates. “I was not dressing up because that’s not really my style you could say, but it was actually hilarious to see what the people in my class came up with. My favorite was probably Louis DiMattio being a construction worker and using one of the stop signs to direct the traffic in the hallway.” Shayla is now attending Keystone college and says, “ Being in college now, Halloween and the environment around holidays in the high school is definitely what I miss the most about high school. I feel like people in college don’t really care about the little things like that anymore.”
Tina Halapin, an alumni of North Pocono class of 2004, was also able to dress up in her Senior year. “I dressed up as an angel and my friend was a cowboy, but we didn’t get awards or anything like that so I think it’s pretty cool that they added that,” says Tina. “Instead of a competition or something like that, they had the Seniors all go to the Middle School and have a parade and walk around to the classrooms and see the kids. I wish they still did that because it was genuinely one of my favorite days of Senior Year.”
While a well known debate is whether or not students should have school on Halloween, a possible resolution is to make the school day fun. Learning in an elevated spirit or environment may just be the solution. Halloween comes with many traditions and customs. North Pocono alone does an amazing job at giving seniors a last chance to be “kids” before they are out in the real world.
