COVINGTON TWP, Pa., Nov. 8, 2024- On the spooky night of October 31st, the Lady Trojans took on the Lady Bulldogs of Berwick for the District 3A Championship. With the fight back and forth, neither of the teams wanted to give up. One team knew it wasn’t going to go their way, but they wouldn’t give up until that scoreboard was at 25. The match went to all five sets, and the Lady Bulldogs pulled away with the win.
With an emotional night senior setter, Soyer DeLucy talks about the whole feel of the night. “The first set we were all pretty nervous, and then once we got past the first ten points we played our game.” The Lady Trojans took the first set away and did not give away their push. “I was so proud of how we battled back and forth with them when we lost all energy. Someone would just come right in and bring it right up.” This team showed how mentally tough they were with the little things and why they were so successful in the regular season. “Going undefeated in the regular season was so great, and then going so hard in the playoffs felt even better.”
Junior libero Pia Zangardi showed, and talked about, no quit with this team. “We lost both sets 2 and 3 and we could have just dropped it all right there and given up, but we didn’t. We came right back and won set 4.” Both teams had positives and negatives with errors like hitting out of the court, missing their serve, or even shanking a pass. “This was my second time playing in a District final, and there’s no room for error, but it is supernormal to make them but that’s why you have the team behind you to pick you up.”
The Lady Trojans finish the year with a record of 18-2 with the loss against Berwick, and that ended their the season. They also finished the regular season undefeated and won the Lackawanna League Championship. The team had five seniors who put so much work into their careers these last four years. “I’m so sad to see my career be over as a Lady Trojan, but I couldn’t be more proud of the team I was a part of,” said DeLucy. Even though the team wanted the gold more than anything, they had a successful year otherwise.
