COVINGTON TWP, Pa., Oct. 18, 2024 – When the period ends, most students feel rushed to get to their next class, considering they only have three minutes and have to beat the hallway rush. With so many people crowding the staircase, it could be hard to get to the next floor.
Some teachers are understanding about the short time they have, while others aren’t. From a student perspective, Junior Molly O’Donnell thinks the hardest classes to get to are from the third floor to the first floor in three minutes. She stated, “It’s even harder when the hallways are so crowded and I get pushed around.” O’Donnell then went on to explain how if they gave students five minutes it would make it so much easier. Not just for her, but many other students that have the same struggle. There is also a big controversy that if you extend the time, it could mess up all the period times.
Molly also thinks that teachers should be understanding if they are two or three minutes late. Not because she was messing around in the hallway, but because it can be truly hard to make it past the rush and get across the school in three minutes. She then stated, “it’s not fair if I have only three minutes to get across the whole school, and then they get mad at me for being thirty seconds late.”
Other students don’t have this much of an issue because they don’t need to go to the third floor. Pia Zangardi has all of her classes on the first and second floor. She said, “yeah it could be crowded sometimes, but I’m never late.” She then went on to say how she agrees that the staircases could get crowded, but it’s not unbearable. Pia tends to disagree with Molly’s opinion, yet she doesn’t have the same classes as her.
Two different students have separate opinions, but they have to consider that they have different schedules. Pia doesn’t have any classes on the third floor. So, would she know how Molly felt? Maybe it would benefit students if they just had an extra minute or two to get from class to class. If that were to happen students would feel unconcerned about how quick they have to walk, or teachers getting upset.
